About Central Valley:
Costa Rica’s Central Valley is a relatively flat, but surrounded by several mountains and the Poas, Barva, Irazu and Turrialba volcanoes. It is home to San Jose, the capital, and most populous city and only large urban city in the country. The entire valley and surrounding mountains cover 11,366 square kilometers which is more than a fifth of the country’s total area, yet it is home to three quarters of the country’s residents.
Because of the weather and the fertility of the land, this region favors agriculture and farming which is influenced by the many rivers that run through the valley, making it the preferred place to settle initially. This early concentration of the population eventually lead to the Central Valley becoming the center of commerce, industry and service activities in Costa Rica. Ports on each coasts provide goods and services to the valley, which is also home to the Juan Santamaria International Airport.
The Central Valley is famous for its "perfect" weather. The altitude varies between 800 meters and 1,500 meters above sea level which impacts the rainfall, average temperatures and humidity. Throw out the extremes in all cases, 85% of the Central Valley enjoys year-round spring-like weather with low humidity and nice breezes.
Some of the Central Valley's more popular destinations are San Jose the capitol, Escazu, Atenas, Orotina, Cariari, San Antonio de Belen, Heredia, Alajuela, San Ramon and Santa Ana just to name a few. On the outskirts of the greater metropolitan area is Escazu, widely considered the Beverly Hills of Costa Rica, it attracts movie stars, celebrities and athletes. There you’ll find the world class Cima Hospital as well as Multiplaza Mall, one of the finest in malls Central America.
Less than a few hours drive away from the Central Valley are virtually all of Costa Rica’s most popular activities like golfing, canopy tours, gambling, surfing, deep sea fishing, volcano tours, coffee tours, camping, hiking, ATV’ing, horseback riding, zip-lining, waterfalls and hot springs, rafting and much more. The possibilities are simply endless in this amazing country.
