The Language Barrier
.
Of course, knowing spanish is very helpful in Costa Rica, but it's not a necessity. English widely spoken here and it could be said that most Ticos speak at least some english, most of Costa Rican speak it very well, especially the younger generation. Costa Rica is also populated with people from all over the world like USA, Spain, Germany, Brazil, France, Australia and Canada. Of course, they all speak their native languages and are almost always proficient in english.
But if you moved to Costa Rica for the right reasons, you'll find yourself venturing into the less touristy areas. Places that a basic common of the language can be helpful of outright needed. Basic salutations, how to get directions, how to pay for things, how to order your food… these will come in handy. And what you don't know, the locals are only too happy to try and fill in the blanks with a smile on their face. But if you truly want to immures yourself into the Pura Vida lifestyle, you'll eventually have to learn the language.
